Proposition K and advertising
There are many forms of advertising we see every day. Our daily exposure to ads is estimated to be between 5,000 and 10,000.
We tune them out most of the time, but if you look at the psychological strategies used in advertising, things get fascinating. Advertising wouldn't be used if it didn't work for marketers.
Aristotle described three types of persuasive arguments in his Rhetoric 2,000 years ago: ethos, logos, and pathos. In his opinion, persuasion always contains at least one of these rhetorical elements, and advertisers rely on them as well.
With modern technology, it has become easier to learn about the different types of advertising. And just like everything in life, there is good, bad, and ugly. Persuasion has also become easier with modern technology.
In regards to advertising, do you all remember Greta Thunberg? The little girl who took the microphone and grabbed the spotlight and seemed sick in front of the UN. That was all part of a plan and I'll elaborate later. However, local radical left organizations gladly took the money, and are currently imitating the same technique Greta Thunberg's parents used at that time. As an exchange, they would like to pass a few things that could severely affect our already struggling economy in exchange for compassion for young people.
The project is called "Proposition K", where they plan to "save the planet". Sadly, if it passes, the only thing we will save is the financial well-being of a small minority. Even our local media, which generally backs the city and cannot criticize its radical left leaders, has pointed out how this could negatively impact our city.
Back to Greta Tintin Eleonora Ernman Thunberg, she is the daughter of Malena Ernman and Svante Thunberg. Due to the unpredicted pregnancy of their child in 2018, their careers as actors and celebrities were halted. The father stayed in the business but in a smaller role. Following the birth of their sick daughter, the mother became a stay-at-home mom and caregiver. To make sure their newborn daughter was well cared for, she wanted to be there for her.
It wasn't just you who felt sorry for her during her speech in 2019. There was a sense that the child was sick and not fully present. In fact, she was diagnosed with asperger's syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and selective mutism.
She was seen as an opportunity for her parents to get back into business, and so they put on a show to gain compassion. Certainly, no one is immune to the plight of a sick child who is concerned about the environment, right?
As a result of that stunt, the mother got into politics, and the father left his career to become her career manager. Now they enjoy a comfortable lifestyle with their family business, and Greta even has her own non-profit and lives mainly off of public donations and the money she makes from selling her climate change campaign. There are a lot of big corporations and financial tycoons that invest heavily in radical left propaganda all the time.
In fact, we have local organizations doing the same thing, but I don't think these kids are sick, the only sick ones are the parents disguising an image just to get people to vote for their evil agenda.
It is well known that Greta is an extremist, from every angle. According to her predictions in 2018, the world would end up wiped out if we didn't stop using fossil fuels in the next 5 years. Well, here we are five years later and the world seems to be doing just fine. The post has now been removed from her social media accounts.
There's a lot of parallels between that and what's being sold by these local organizations as a persuasive argument. But if you stop and analyze this for a minute, you can quickly find several campaigns that said the same thing previously. I can't think of anything more boring than this unoriginal advertising campaign. Don't let it fool you; we've seen it before.
I am sure my daughters could easily persuade your mind to sign a petition to "save the planet" if they were wearing t-shirts that said "Save the Planet" and approached you at local malls or other places full of people who are not involved in politics. You don't have to worry, I won't do that. Despite my passion for saving the planet and making better daily life decisions to positively impact our surroundings, this plan is far too risky.
Another example of how illogical this is is their attempt to purchase El Paso's electric company. Most El Pasoans are unaware that the utility company "EP Electric" has never been owned by anyone from El Paso. Previously, it was owned by a Dallas-based private equity group that was recently sold to JP Morgan Chase. When they realized the utility company was for sale in this monopoly that they control from Sierra Blanca TX to Deming NM, they offered 4.3 billion dollars for it. As the sole and rightful owners of electricity in that whole area, they knew they could control the rates and dictate all kinds of increments. A bank owning a utility company was a bad idea for El Paso for obvious reasons, the city said. In addition, they worried that the new owners might increase rates in an attempt to recoup their investment.
El Paso tried to purchase the utility company for the first time. Two financial advisors that they hired met twice that year to analyze their strategy. According to the same advisors, we could not afford 4.3 billion dollars at that time, so they recommended not doing anything, and letting the bank take over the utility company. In the event the bank sells their newly acquired asset, they won't lose any money, on the contrary. After a couple of years, the economy is in worse shape than it was in 2019. They also want to borrow far more than just 4.3 billion dollars and eliminate some jobs. That really makes no sense.
This is clearly the work of people with no understanding of the economy or who simply don't care about it. Both are bad, and I don't know which one is worse. Vote against "Prop K". Election day is May 6th, with early voting between April 24th and May 2nd.
